Bernhard von Breydenbach

Peregrinatio in terram sanctam
Fold-out panorama of Venice
Detail from Reuwich's multi-leaf fold-out view of Venice, with the arcaded Doge's Palace, the Bacino crowded with gondolas, and a great galley at right (leaf 00033).
Saracen alphabet
Woodcut table of the Saracen (Arabic) alphabet, each letter named (Aleph, Beth, Gomal, Dolath…), introduced by the text "Cuius littera vera est hic infra subinserta" — one of the first printed specimens of an exotic script (leaf 00169).
The Georgians
Ethnographic costume woodcut "De Georgianis et eorum moribus et ritibus," depicting two Georgian figures with oriental script captions above them (leaf 00175).
1 / 4

The first printed illustrated travel book. Erhard Reuwich, who accompanied Breydenbach on the 1483–84 pilgrimage to Jerusalem, supplied the woodcuts — including a five-leaf fold-out panorama of Venice and large city views — making him effectively the first book illustrator identifiable by name. A 15th-century bestseller, reprinted and translated in roughly a dozen editions by 1522.
